History
On 1 June 1954 the zoo opened its doors. Beautifully located between the river Spree and Branitzer park the animal park with German animals was created at a very short time, the National integration and citizens helped to build it. Under the direction of Dipl. -Biol. Frommhold Erhard (1956-1963) Cottbus animal park became a nationally recognized zoo - as one of the first eight in the GDR. Dipl.-Biol. Rauschert Kunz (1963-1966) succeeded as Director, then Dipl.-Biol. Klaus Jacob (1966-2002) , who coined the park crucial in the coming decades . With the opening of carnivore house 1968 Lions, Tigers and Bears moved in a year later, 1969, the first elephant ( Sundali ) came to Cottbus. Soon also an extensive collection of geese , ducks, storks and other water birds quickly became known, for their successful keeping and breeding at Cottbus zoo. First time breedings from this period were Chilean Flamingo in 1977 and West African Crowned Crane 1979. A milestone in German Zoo Story was the first meeting of the reunified German Association of Zoo Directors in East Germany , to which the Tierpark Cottbus had invited 1993. It subsequently got support from the city of Cottbus. Various companies founded in 1994 zoo - support association and errected new buildings , as administrative and social buildings (1991 ) , Penguin Rocks (1993 ), House for Porcupines and meerkats (1993 ), extending the stork house (1999 ) Gibbons house (1997). In 2002, Klaus Jacob retired , as his successor was Dr. med. Jens Kämmerling appointed . During his time these buildings were erected Parrot aviary and snack bar (2011), cowshed (2011), new annex, predator house and spacious tiger enclosure financed by funds from the INTERREG IV a funding program and the city of Cottbus 2014/2015), poultry house (2014) and the silver monkey house in 2017 with the support of the Cottbus Chamber of Crafts .
